GLP-1 Medications and the Untapped Opportunity for Emotional Healing
Hello everyone,
I wanted to share some exciting developments in my practice that I think you'll find interesting. This year, I've been dedicating my time to writing a book about emotional eating, which will be published in spring 2025. This book has been deeply inspired by the journeys of many of you who have been part of my Transformational Eating classes, and I'm eager to share a new way to heal emotional eating by harnessing the power of your heart.
GLP-1s: A New Frontier
This brings me to another area of focus in my practice: GLP-1 medications and their relationship to emotional eating. It's a new frontier, and one I plan to be at the forefront of.
As clients on GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro seek my guidance, I've witnessed the unique challenges and opportunities they face. While the nutrition and wellness communities debate the morality of these medications, I choose to focus on providing support and paving a path of peace.
The Quiet & The Deep Work
These medications effectively turn off the "food noise"—that incessant, oppressive food chatter so many of us experience. This creates a profound opportunity for emotional healing.
Many of us have felt uncomfortable in our bodies for years, even decades. GLP-1s offer a new terrain, a chance to ponder past traumas or anxieties about the future. It's a time for deeper understanding and healing. I believe that self-compassion, combined with parts work, is the most effective way to facilitate this process.
However, it's crucial to remember that medication doesn't replace inner work. I've seen clients assume they're past their food struggles and plan to stay on GLP-1s indefinitely. But for many, the "food noise" creeps back when they stop the medication, experience a plateau, or even have to discontinue the medication due to cost or side effects.
Whether or not food noise returns, utilizing this respite for inner work is vital. It prepares us for the future, whatever it may hold. The experiences of my clients on GLP-1s have been invaluable in refining my 8-week online Transformational Eating program, allowing me to offer even greater freedom in their hearts, minds, and bodies.
Setting the Standard for Compassionate Care
I've been asked why I've chosen to expand my practice in this direction. My answer is simple: to set the standard of compassionate-mindfulness work for those who need it. GLP-1 medications are here to stay, and the results I've seen are incredible. However, they call for a unique, heart-centered approach that addresses the specific needs of those using them, and my work does just that. The best part? It doesn’t necessarily require years of therapy.
It's estimated that nearly 1 in 8 US adults are already using or have used a GLP-1 medication, highlighting their growing prevalence. This underscores the importance of integrating emotional support and self-compassion into treatment plans.
Your thoughts? I'd love to hear your perspectives on GLP-1 medications and the importance of inner work. Please share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below!
